The user community has found a way to run AMD FSR 4, a new AI-based upscaling system, on Steam Deck and other older architectures.
Officially, FSR 4 is designed for RDNA 4 video cards, but a video posted online shows that it is possible to install the necessary files and activate FSR 4 in games compatible with FSR 3.1 and DirectX 12. There is no official support, but the improvements are noticeable.
In games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the difference is obvious: distant objects become clearer, and the picture as a whole looks cleaner and more detailed. So far, the frame rate increase is insignificant, but the visual improvements more than compensate for this. Similar benefits extend to other not-so-new configurations, including RDNA 3 video cards and older solutions, expanding the range of users who can benefit.
The effect of FSR 4 will not be limited to PCs and the Valve portable console. Rumor has it that the technology will appear on PS5 Pro in 2026, along with the new PSSR. AMD FSR 4 promises to be a key technology for a smoother and clearer gaming experience, even on older devices.
