Starfield Creator Explained Why the Game Didn't Become the New Skyrim and Fallout

The space RPG had high hopes, but the final result failed to impress all players.

The developers managed to attract attention to Starfield, but in the long run, the project did not perform as well as other Bethesda games — TES V Skyrim and Fallout 4.

In a conversation with FRVR, former Starfield system designer Bruce Nesmith, who left the project about a year before its release, shared his opinion on why the new game failed to reach the "caliber" of Fallout and Elder Scrolls:

«I think [Starfield] is a good game. However, I don’t think it’s on the same level as the other two, like Fallout, Skyrim, or rather, Elder Scrolls, but I think it’s a good game. I worked on it and I’m proud of the work I did. And I’m proud of the work of my friends and I think they created a great game»

However, he acknowledges the problem with procedural generation in Starfield:

«When the planets start to seem very similar and you don’t start to feel the excitement associated with exploring the planets, that’s when, in my opinion, everything falls apart.

Bruce Nesmith suggests that if Starfield had been released by a studio other than Bethesda, it would have been received differently. He is sure that it is not such a bad game. The developer himself was involved in the project with "astronomical data."
