Hideo Kojima had never heard that Konami had offered him a game based on "The Matrix." "No one told me about it in all 26 years."
Surprisingly, it seems no one at Konami told Kojima that the Wachowskis had offered him to create a game based on "The Matrix."
According to Time Extension and an interview with former Konami executive Christopher Bergstresser, Hideo Kojima was allegedly the subject of an offer from the Wachowskis to make a video game based on "The Matrix." Konami refused with a single word "no," and the project never materialized. For fans, the idea of a "Matrix" game from the creator of Metal Gear Solid was shocking, but Kojima himself also reacted to the news.
"In all 26 years, no one told me that such a conversation even took place," he wrote on X. Although Kojima and the Wachowskis were mutual fans, exchanged letters, and met three times, no direct offers were made to Kojima.
The creator explained that he was not present at the Wachowskis' meeting with the CS division of Konami, where the project was allegedly discussed.
"When I arrived at headquarters, their meeting with Mr. Kitaué, the head of the CS division, was already over. I joined later, we chatted for about an hour without an interpreter (Aki wasn't even there)."
But no one told him about the offer.
Although it is doubtful that Kojima could have agreed then (he was busy with Metal Gear Solid 2), he noted:
"If someone had told me, maybe we could have pulled it off."
