After the success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Nintendo has seriously embarked on creating its own cinematic universe.
A new rumor related to Nintendo's plans to adapt its own franchises indicates that the company is working on an animated film about Donkey Kong. This was reported by insider MyTimeToShineHello, who says that the project is tentatively scheduled for release in 2028 — after the release of The Legend of Zelda adaptation, which is expected to premiere in May 2027. Insider Daniel Richtman also previously mentioned the possible development of a Donkey Kong movie, but did not provide details at the time.
Nintendo has already confirmed at a meeting with investors that it intends to release film adaptations on an ongoing basis. The corporate presentation mentioned "other projects" in production, and, apparently, the first of these may be the Donkey Kong adaptation.
Donkey Kong has already appeared on screen — in the Mario movie, where he was voiced by Seth Rogen, but the character is not listed in the upcoming sequel. Rogen himself said a year ago that he would like to see an adaptation of Donkey Kong Country, a game that, according to him, "is perfect for a family adventure about friendship and freedom."
