Dispatch developer explains why the game became one of the biggest hits of the fall. According to co-director Chris Rebbert, the success was ensured by a simple combination — a strong story without complex mechanics.
When we discuss our favorite games, the phrase always comes up: “I just need a linear story. I don’t want to compete.” I’m not saying that such entertainment shouldn’t be available to those who like it, but I think many would like to have the same experience [as us — ed.]. It is important that they launch the game and experience something personal through a linear plot — without interference in the form of microtransactions and the like.
All Dispatch episodes were released on PC and PS5. The authors believe that the weekly release schedule also contributed to the success — the chapter was released not immediately and not once a month, but weekly, like a TV series.
Interest was fueled by actors Aaron Paul and Laura Bailey, as well as the demand for superhero stories. In a month, the game sold over 2 million copies.
