The loot box system with random skins has long been criticized.
Recently, Counter-Strike 2 players noticed that some rare cases stopped dropping after the update.
Perhaps, in the foreseeable future, Valve will remove cases from CS2. Dataminer Thour clarified that existing cases will not be taken away:
By "removing cases" I mean that new cases will not be added, they will be replaced by terminals. Existing cases will remain.
Earlier, "terminals" were introduced in Counter-Strike 2 — they drop like cases, and players "contact a merchant" through them. The NPC offers a random skin, and then the user can decide whether to buy it or try to update the offer (this option is available a limited number of times).
It is assumed that in this way Valve intends to circumvent the restrictions on gambling that apply to cases (loot boxes). In the "terminal", the player sees the "contents of the case" before buying.
