In the latest episode of The Xbox Two podcast, host Jez Corden confirmed that the new project is being developed using Unreal Engine, although details are scarce.

Previously, Age of Empires IV ran on its own Essence engine, which turned out to be difficult to adapt to the long-term requirements of the series. Therefore, Microsoft and Relic Entertainment are switching to an Unreal Engine-based solution with deep customization for real-time strategy.

Corden noted that World's Edge Studios is involved in creating the core of the project and will likely collaborate with another team to complete development. He emphasized that Age of Empires remains one of Microsoft's most valuable intellectual properties, and despite the decline in popularity of the RTS genre, the company has "occupied a niche," especially with the growing presence of Xbox on PC.

The host also clarified that official announcements should not be expected yet: details of the plot and time frame are unknown. According to him, when the game returns, it will be "big time".
