Although James Bond stories are known for their action scenes, they have always also included calmer episodes focused on character interaction. 007: First Light by IO Interactive is built on the same principle.
In an interview, cutscene and narrative director Martin Emborg said that the game will provide breathing room between action-heavy moments, unlike the classic Hitman formula.
According to Emborg, in terms of pacing the project is closer to Hitman: Absolution (2012), where shootouts were combined with stealth, espionage, and a strong story focus. He noted that this approach may not appeal to everyone, but for Bond it is necessary.
The reason for this approach is that the Bond experience is much more tightly tied to storytelling and is often built around time pressure. The World of Assassination sandbox format does not meet the needs of an action-adventure like 007: First Light. Social stealth and infiltration are important elements of the game, but it needs an additional narrative focus, as in Absolution.
Emborg also emphasized the role of social infiltration.
I hope this experience will allow players to feel like the real Bond — with his intellect and charm. Not shooting, not racing in a cool car, but simply being Bond. This has barely been explored in games. Action is important, but we expect players to be surprised by the quieter moments as well.
007: First Light will be released on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The release was originally planned for March, but was postponed to May 27.
