Most tools look impressive in demos but turn out to be useless in real work.
The gaming industry continues to actively implement artificial intelligence, but its real benefits are still in question. This was stated by the head of the transformation direction of Keywords Studios, John Gibson.
Keywords Studios is a major provider of technological and creative solutions for the gaming industry. The company participated in projects such as Dune: Awakening, Marvel Rivals, Still Wakes the Deep, Alan Wake Remastered, Dead Island 2, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
According to him, despite the rapid growth of interest in AI, most tools do not yet meet the expectations of developers. As part of internal research, the company tested more than 500 solutions, but only about six turned out to be truly useful.
Gibson noted that many modern AI tools are created to demonstrate capabilities, rather than to solve specific development problems. As a result, they look impressive in demos but turn out to be useless in real work.
In his opinion, the industry is currently in a "chaotic phase" of AI development. The main challenge is to move to a stage where technologies can be stably used in game production: provide predictable results, be controlled by people, and comply with legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
He also emphasized that there is a serious gap between impressive AI demonstrations and the real use of technologies in production. To overcome this gap, companies need to first identify their problems and tasks, and then select or develop tools for specific needs.
