"We didn't want to offend Xbox": Yoshida explained the iconic PS4 ad
Although the industry remembers it as one of the loudest "hits" in marketing, former Sony Interactive Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida offered a new explanation for the situation.
According to him, the video instruction on how to share games on PS4 was not aimed at ridiculing Microsoft, although that's how it was perceived at the time.
In an interview, Yoshida explained that the video was a spontaneous reaction to the information chaos during E3 2013. After Xbox announced a strict DRM policy and the requirement for a constant internet connection, media and players began asking Sony questions about used game support.
The Sony team wanted to quickly and simply explain their position. Yoshida admitted that working on the video was "a lot of fun," but emphasized that the goal was not to offend the competitor.
In the video itself, Yoshida hands a box with Killzone Shadow Fall to Adam Boyes and briefly says that this is what "sharing games on PS4" looks like.
Now the story has taken on a new twist. According to online reports, Sony may have implemented a DRM system that requires an internet connection to extend game licenses.
