Hackers Launched Linux on PS5 - Console Becomes a Gaming PC
The homebrew community has achieved what was long considered unattainable: Linux has been successfully launched on PlayStation 5 with full GPU acceleration via Vulkan drivers.
This means the console can now function as a full-fledged gaming PC.
The key to the breakthrough is a custom bootloader and kernel patch that unlock access to the RDNA 2 architecture graphics chip. Previously, Linux on PS5 only allowed basic display without hardware acceleration. Now, the situation has changed.
Users can run games from Steam, including GTA 5 with ray tracing, and play directly on the Sony Interactive Entertainment console with performance up to 60 FPS.
However, this does not work for everyone. The exploit is only available on older firmware versions 3.00–4.03. New updates that closed the jailbreak make the method unavailable to most owners.
Running Linux with full GPU functionality opens the way for emulation, streaming, and the potential creation of SteamOS for PS5.
