"Monumentally Stupid, Yet Engaging": First Reviews of "Mortal Kombat 2" Emerge
"Mortal Kombat 2" turned out to be better than the 2021 reboot, although some critics see it as just a "tasteless sequel made for fans."
Critics have shared their first reviews of "Mortal Kombat 2." At the time of publication, the film received 77% approval on Rotten Tomatoes after 66 reviews and 50 points on Metacritic after 23 reviews.
For comparison, the 2021 "Mortal Kombat" received 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and 60 points on Metacritic. The situation turned out to be curious: the sequel garnered more positive reviews but lagged behind the first part in average score. The reason is that, along with improvements, reviewers note problems with humor, script, pacing, and visual effects.
Frank Scheck, a reviewer for The Hollywood Reporter, was particularly harsh on the film, calling it "a tasteless sequel made exclusively for fans." In his opinion, the creators addressed the main complaint about the first part and finally focused on the tournament. However, beyond endless fights and fan service, the film has little to offer the average viewer.

Some critics considered this an advantage. Many reviewers write that the film has become more dynamic and quickly moves to the main point – fights, fatalities, and fan service. The Movie Podcast reviewer called the film "purest arcade energy" and noted that seeing the characters in action is "an incredible pleasure." An Inverse journalist wrote that the film offers exactly what is expected from Mortal Kombat: "stunning brawling and stomach-churning brutality" against the backdrop of a "monumentally stupid, yet still engaging" plot.
Special praise went to Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. Even in negative reviews, it is noted that his character added the necessary charisma and proper chaos to the film, and Urban himself is called the best element of the picture.
For now, the situation does not look catastrophic and resembles the case of "Super Mario: The Galactic Movie." Critics met it even more harshly, but the film grossed $900 million worldwide in a month because it succeeded in the main thing – attracting fans. We will soon find out if "Mortal Kombat 2" will succeed: the world premiere of the film will take place on May 8.
