Steam experienced a tax payment glitch - gamers fear they or Valve will face problems
Some Steam Controller buyers raised the alarm, as they do not want to have problems with the US tax authorities and other countries.
On May 4, Valve officially began selling the Steam Controller. The new gamepad quickly sold out, and at that moment, Steam experienced problems due to high load. It seems that at this moment, a payment system glitch occurred — the tax was not charged during payment.
Gamers began to share their concerns: they suggested that this incident could create problems for Valve, or that buyers would later be charged the underpaid tax amount when the error was noticed.
A user with the nickname Sad-Mirror6936 also noticed that the tax was not charged and decided to immediately contact Valve to clarify the situation:
I noticed that the tax was not charged, and decided to write about it to support. I also saw other posts about it, so I'm sharing the response from Steam support. To the commentators: Valve would have found out about it sooner or later anyway, so I preferred to deal with it now rather than face possible consequences later. I saw many other posts about the tax not being charged — it's not some secret.
Valve thanked Sad-Mirror6936 for the information. The support response reassured the community — everything has already been resolved, and no additional funds will be charged from buyers:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are aware of the issue, and it has already been fixed. No additional funds will be charged from your wallet. Thank you for using Steam.
