Players criticized Vapor World for "AI slop" - game director announced abandonment of AI and removal of cutscenes after a wave of criticism

News

Recently, ALIVE and Boltray Games released Vapor World: Over The Mind on PC via Steam. The new title received "mostly negative" reviews, with a rating of 36%.

The reason for player dissatisfaction was not only the quality of some game elements (bugs are present) but also "AI slop." The developers decided to use artificial intelligence to create cutscenes.

After a wave of criticism, the game director of Vapor World: Over The Mind addressed the community. He admitted that he did not expect such a reaction and announced the abandonment of AI:

Firstly, from this moment on, we will not use AI-generated cutscenes. Secondly, we will remove all AI cutscenes and completely replace them with our own original content. We tried for a very long time to tell the story of this game with cutscenes made entirely by ourselves. Each time the result was terrible. We concluded that we could not properly convey the complex and difficult narrative of this game in this way, and that is why we turned to AI. But if this choice worsened your impression of the game, the fault lies not with the tool — it is in our own shortcomings.

The game director admitted that replacing original cutscenes with AI "was a mistaken decision." He expected that some players "would be disappointed by the use of AI," but did not expect this disappointment to be so widespread.

A patch has already been released for Vapor World: Over The Mind, which removes all AI-generated cutscenes. The developers said that they restored the original cutscenes that they made themselves before switching to the new AI-created version.
