PS5 Sells Worse Than a Year Ago - Is the Market Saturated or Are Prices to Blame?

Sony has published a new financial report showing a significant decline in PS5 sales. Despite major releases in recent months, interest in the console was lower than expected.

Over the past 3 months, the company shipped 1.5 million PS5 consoles to stores. This is 900 thousand less than in the same period a year earlier. Total PS5 sales reached 93.7 million units, but the growth rate has clearly slowed down.

At the same time, Sony continued to release major games and develop digital services. However, players seem to be less actively transitioning to the new generation.

Among the reasons cited are market saturation – many have already bought the console in previous years. Rising prices also play a role: Sony increased the cost of the PS5 in several regions, and the PS5 Pro remains an expensive device.

PlayStation Network continues to grow: the service has 125 million active monthly users, which is one million more than a year ago. The shift to digital purchases is also intensifying – 85% of game sales are digital versions.

Total game sales on PS5 and PS4 amounted to 74.6 million copies, which is also lower than last year's result. Even Sony's internal studio games show a decline – 5.8 million copies sold (-0.1%).
