The authors of "The Expanse" spoke about the difficulties of adapting the "The K'tharr War" series with dozens of alien races
The writing duo under the pseudonym James S. A. Corey returns to television with a more ambitious space opera.
The authors of "The Expanse", Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, working under the pseudonym James S. A. Corey, admitted that their new series "The K’tharr War" turned out to be extremely inconvenient for television adaptation. According to the writers, they deliberately did not try to simplify the material for a future series, although they already have many years of experience working on the adaptation of "The Expanse".
In an interview with Polygon, Abraham said that the project's showrunner was both annoyed and puzzled by how difficult the new saga turned out to be for screen adaptation.
In the series, the authors focused on internal experiences, large-scale galactic politics, and many exotic alien races. All of this will require serious reworking before turning the books into a script.
This issue was not thought through in advance, as the series was not written specifically for television, and discussions about adaptation began when the authors "had either finished or almost finished working on the first book."
The "The K’tharr War" series began in 2024 with the novel "The Grace of Gods". According to the plot, humanity encounters the K’tharr Empire — an insect-like civilization that enslaves sentient species throughout the galaxy. After the invasion of the planet Angiin, some humans are sent to a giant "palace-world" inhabited by dozens of alien races, where the captives have to survive.
Numerous alien races cause particular concern for the authors. "The Expanse" leaned towards realism, while "The K’tharr War" will require expensive post-production with large-scale computer graphics. However, the project has not yet reached the stage of discussing visual effects.
"The adaptation, in fact, is a million tiny blocks stacked on top of each other. By this point, I think we've already added the third block. So there are still thousands of blocks ahead before anyone says, 'Okay, now let's talk about visual effects.' At this stage, we're discussing things like, 'Are we even going to write a script?'"
Essentially, work on adapting the new series is just beginning, and the authors still have many tasks ahead. Despite the obvious complexity and high cost of the project, the series is being created with the support of Amazon. In addition, the authors themselves determined in advance that the series would be smaller than "The Expanse" and would be limited to a trilogy. Therefore, the adaptation has a chance to reach the end of the story — unlike "The Expanse" series, which was canceled after the sixth season, without bringing the plot to the end of the book series.
The second book in "The K’tharr War" series, titled "The Justice of Kings", will be released abroad in August 2026.
