"Avengers: Secret Wars" Could Be the Russo Brothers' Finale in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The directors do not plan to stay in the MCU after the next two crossovers, although things could still change.
The directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo spoke at the Deadline Studios panel at SXSW London, noting that their return to the MCU does not mean the beginning of a new decade-long marathon. According to them, the upcoming films "Avengers: Doctor Doom" and "Avengers: Secret Wars" are being created as a single, complete story that will be the final point of their work in the franchise, so they are not making long-term plans for collaboration with Marvel after 2027.
"The stories we are focused on right now are entirely self-contained. 'Doctor Doom' and 'Secret Wars' are in dialogue with each other and form a single, complete statement. Will we collaborate with Marvel after this? Possibly, but right now our creative vision is limited to the end of 'Secret Wars'."
They also spoke about the intense production schedule: post-production for the first film and pre-production for the second are currently underway simultaneously. Joe Russo joked that work on "Doctor Doom" will continue until November 2026, until the studio literally "rips the film out of their hands" before the premiere.
"Avengers: Doctor Doom" is set to premiere on December 18, 2026, and "Avengers: Secret Wars" in December 2027.
