"Fans can sleep soundly": Street Fighter 6 Game Director Reveals How He Saved the Adaptation from Failure
The first draft of the Street Fighter movie script was so weak that Capcom had to intervene in the film's production.
The upcoming Street Fighter reboot from Legendary almost went the way of many failed video game adaptations. Street Fighter 6 Game Director Takayuki Nakayama admitted that the first draft he received was quite rough. The text matched fans' worst fears, which forced Nakayama to actively get involved in the process and spend two years helping rewrite the plot. But now he is completely satisfied with the result:
"Honestly, the first script I got was pretty rough – probably exactly what people imagine it to be. So we spent about two years turning it into what we see now. The director is also very cool, so we worked with a great film crew, and the actors are highly motivated. And since I am directly involved in the process, I have no concerns at all. I mean, I just watched the movie and thought, 'This is fun.'"
Nakayama noted that adapting a franchise like Street Fighter is extremely difficult, as everyone has their own idea of what Street Fighter is. Nevertheless, he is confident that director Kitao Sakurai ("Beef", "Twisted Metal") and the entire team approached the material with great respect.
"Personally, I think the reaction has been really positive. You know, adapting a game directly into a movie or TV series format, as you said, is incredibly difficult. Everyone has their own understanding of what Street Fighter is, so I'm sure opinions are divided. But the director and the entire team really took the time to understand how the world of Street Fighter works and to reflect on the experiences that shaped us as children; the people making this movie are Street Fighter fans themselves. So fans can sleep soundly."

The film's plot will transport viewers to 1993 and focus on the World Warrior tournament, where Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, and Ken, played by Noah Centineo, find themselves embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy. The cast also includes Cody Rhodes, Eric Andre, 50 Cent, Jason Momoa, and others.
Street Fighter is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 16, 2026.
