Resident Evil Creator: If Watching a Stream Was Enough for You, Then the Game Was Weak
YouTuber Eiko Kano, known for his Resident Evil playthroughs, spoke about a conversation with Shinji Mikami, the creator of the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4, regarding streams and playthrough videos.
Japanese YouTuber Eiko Kano appeared on a TV show where he shared “cool” life stories. He mentioned meeting Mikami as one such moment. In Japan, the topic of streams remains controversial: some developers consider them free advertising, while others see them as a cause of lost sales if players “consume” the plot through videos and don't buy the game. Kano himself was worried about his streams because of this.
Although he had permission from Capcom, he was concerned that he was essentially revealing the plot and puzzles of Resident Evil. When he met Mikami in person, he decided to directly ask for his opinion. According to Kano, he was ready to stop streaming if the answer was negative.
Mikami allegedly replied:
If viewers who watched the game's broadcast to the end were satisfied, then the game was exactly that.
Our job is to make games that make people want to play them themselves, even if they've already seen a playthrough, so keep streaming.
Kano noted that he heard almost the same answer from Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII remakes, expressed a similar position.
