Gamers "cancel future pre-orders" of GTA VI due to one frame - Digital Foundry explains the missing Ferris wheel reflection
Players are carefully studying new promotional materials, and the absence of one reflection is causing concern.
Rockstar Games recently published the Grand Theft Auto VI cover, as well as a new teaser. Players were able to see a panorama of nighttime Vice City, and one moment horrified some players.
A user under the nickname mr-buttons_007 noticed the Ferris wheel in the background – for some reason, it is not reflected in the water, although reflections of other objects are rendered normally.
- FlyingAce1015 joked that his post would lead to a "release delay."
- Formal-Beat525: "Yeah, this is just unplayable."
- LittleBIGman83: "Canceling my future pre-order."
- LavishnessLast6024: "They need more time. This video looks unfinished."
Digital Foundry noticed the discussions about this moment online, and specialists decided to share their vision. They said that ray tracing is used to render reflections in the central bay of the city and noted that these RT reflections turned out to be noticeably brighter than the original objects: "one of the signs [of ray tracing] is that the game, in this case, reflects the geometric mesh of nearby buildings, but without taking into account shadows and ambient occlusion [shading]."
Specialists also said that to save GPU resources, ray tracing can be configured to selectively include or exclude objects. Perhaps the Ferris wheel fell into the latter category:
[…] This explains the absence of the Ferris wheel reflection. It is approximately the same distance away as the surrounding buildings, but apparently, it is not marked for reflection creation using ray tracing.
In addition, they drew players' attention to the use of SSR (screen space reflections):
SSR is still used here in a limited role – as a fallback method, which is noticeable by the slight clipping of the reflection at the edges of the screen. Where ray tracing is not applied, SSR fills some gaps on the water surface, although, obviously, this does not apply to geometry like the Ferris wheel.
Digital Foundry suggests that this "ray tracing feature" may be fixed by the release of GTA VI.

This is far from the only "complaint" from players about the Grand Theft Auto VI cover. There is still time until the November release, so it is possible that researchers will find other "flaws."
