Voice actor Doug Cockle is known to many as Geralt from The Witcher franchise games (in the English voice-over). He recently spoke with Polygon and, during the interview, shared memories of his work and how he once almost lost his role in "The Witcher."

He auditioned at CD Projekt RED, where he shaped the very voice of Geralt that players heard: "He was described to me as a world-weary anti-hero who has almost no sense of humor and who does really deadly work — and yet is treated terribly." At some point during the audition, the actor was asked to recall Clint Eastwood's character from the "Dirty Harry" films.

At the time of production, the Witcher books had not been translated into English, so the actor relied on CDPR's knowledge: "They had concept art of Geralt, some creatures from the world, Triss, Yennefer, and various other characters — that's all I had to go on."

Doug Cockle was also teaching acting and one day received a message from a friend: "I auditioned for the role of Geralt for The Witcher 2. And I thought that was your role":

I thought they didn't like my work. I must have done something terrible... [...] Or, I don't know, maybe I spat in someone's eye and didn't even notice. Who knows, but anyway, they were looking for a new Geralt.

However, the actor did not give up and contacted screenwriter Boris Pugach-Murashkevich to ask to be reconsidered for the role of Geralt — soon he received a reply, he was invited to work on the game's voice-over again.

Doug Cockle would like to continue playing Geralt:

I think if at 90 I can still play a character like Geralt, I'll be over the moon. Maybe by then Witcher 18 will be out, and it will have an old Geralt training young Witchers or something like that. I want my voice to be Geralt's voice forever, but that's probably selfish of me.
