So it's unlikely that players will be able to make the company change its decision.

Sony has begun reorganizing its largest optical disc manufacturing plant, preparing for the gradual phasing out of physical copies of PlayStation games. Instead of producing discs, the plant will increasingly focus on manufacturing Micro Optics, and employees will be retrained to work with the new products.

The upcoming changes were reported by the Austrian publication ORF.at. According to its data, following Sony's decision to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical media from January 2028, the company has already begun reducing disc production volumes.

Currently, the plant produces about 600,000 discs daily, but this figure will gradually decrease. Sony DADC CEO Dietmar Tanzer stated that PlayStation products currently account for approximately 50% of the plant's workload, but by 2028, this figure is expected to decrease to about 10%.

Despite the reduction in production volumes, Sony does not plan to lay off staff. All 300 employees of the enterprise will undergo retraining to work on new production lines. For this, the company has invested about 30 million euros in equipment and technologies necessary for the production of Micro Optics products.
