The genre is experiencing a true revival.

Toys for Bob, the studio currently working on Spyro: A Realm Beyond, believes that the 3D platformer genre is experiencing a true revival. This was stated by studio head Paul Yan and associate creative director Lou Studdert in an interview with Kinda Funny Gamescast.

When asked if the current period could be called a new "golden age" of 3D platformers, Studdert noted that he would prefer to speak of a genre revival.

I don't know about a golden age, but it's definitely a revival.

According to him, this trend particularly pleases him, as 3D platformers remain his favorite genre. He also called the announcement of Rayman Legends Retold "amazing", and Astro Bot his game of the year at the time of release.

Studdert explained that he considers 3D platformers "the purest form of video games". In his opinion, the essence of the genre lies in the enjoyment of controlling a unique character, exploring the world, and responsive gameplay, while other mechanics only complement this foundation.

The developer also positively assessed the growing number of new projects in the genre.

The more games like this, the better. It's just wonderful. I really love to see it.

During the interview, Toys for Bob representatives were also asked about the possibility of creating a new Banjo-Kazooie installment. Paul Yan emphasized that the studio is currently fully focused on Spyro: A Realm Beyond, but the Banjo-Kazooie franchise has always seemed like a natural choice for the team.

According to the studio head, the series' characters are not just nostalgic, but truly iconic and timeless. He added that the team strives to create games that appeal to players' "inner child", and therefore is a big fan of the classic Rare series.

In addition, Studdert shared new details about Spyro: A Realm Beyond, which is scheduled for release in spring 2027.

One of the key features of the game will be a redesigned flight system. According to the developer, it will require players to constantly make decisions, rather than simply holding a button.

We wanted to make flying an active process, where the player assesses the space, makes decisions, and continues moving just as they would during platforming sections.
