Old Grand Theft Auto VI Build Footage Leaked, If Metadata Is To Be Believed

Experts are confident that the shown version of the game is over a year old.

On August 18, supposedly new GTA VI gameplay footage appeared online, quickly spreading across the internet. Along with it, users began discussing the origin of the files and how recent the published materials actually are.

Particular attention was drawn to a video featuring basketball. File analysis showed that it was encoded using FFmpeg 6.1 (Lavc60.31.102/Lavf60.16.100) — a version released in November 2023. This means that the file in this format could not have been created earlier than November 2023.

However, this fact does not prove that the recording itself was made during that period. The encoder could have been used to process much older video, and the conversion process, apparently, also removed the original metadata that could have indicated the actual recording date.

Against this backdrop, opinions regarding the age of the leaked materials are divided. Well-known insider NateTheHate believes that the published footage may be over a year old and is likely unrelated to the recently discussed private GTA VI previews. However, he could not determine the exact creation date of the materials.

Another viewpoint was expressed by user Spider-Vice on GTA Forums. According to him, the FFmpeg build used in the file indeed dates back to late 2023, but this does not mean that the video itself was recorded then. An older version of FFmpeg could well have been used to process more recent footage.
