The director of 'Superman' is preparing a new chapter in the franchise, in which the hero will have to collaborate with his arch-enemy.
James Gunn's film 'Man of Tomorrow,' the next chapter in his 'Superman Saga,' is set to release on July 9, 2027. The director confirmed that filming will begin in April 2026 — by which time the script will be fully completed.
As Gunn revealed in an interview on the Howard Stern Show, the new story will focus not only on Clark Kent, played by David Corenswet, but also on Lex Luthor, who will once again be played by Nicholas Hoult. This will not just be a sequel, but a story about the forced alliance of two arch-enemies.
"It's a story about how Lex Luthor and Superman are forced to unite to some degree against a much greater threat. But it's much more complicated than that. It's a movie about both Lex and Superman."
According to the director, the script is almost finished. Even before the release of the first part, he began working on the next one, preparing a complete 'treatment' — a detailed structure of the future plot. Now the project is ready to move into the production stage.
Gunn does not rule out the appearance of other characters from the first film, but the emphasis will be on the central duo. He also admitted that after launching the new line of DC films, he is trying to slow down the pace of work — however, 'Man of Tomorrow' remains a priority for him.
The first part, released in 2025, was a successful start to the updated DC cinematic universe — the film grossed over $614 million worldwide and received positive reviews from critics.
Before the release of 'Man of Tomorrow,' viewers can expect at least two projects: Craig Gillespie's 'Supergirl' (June 26, 2026) and James Watkins' 'Clayface' (September 11, 2026).
