Lightning Returns? MSI Prepares RTX 50 Extreme OC for Enthusiasts

It seems MSI is planning to revive the Lightning series. The developer of Afterburner is already testing the first RTX 50 Extreme OC samples with unique overclocking features.

MSI is working on its own GeForce RTX 50 series video cards in a unique Extreme OC design. The first engineering samples of these solutions have already reached the developer of the popular MSI Afterburner utility, known as Unwinder. He will be implementing support for new overclocking features in the upcoming beta versions of the program.

The main difference between future MSI cards and the reference RTX 5090 and 5080 is unlocked access to the MP2988 and MP29816A power controllers. In NVIDIA's reference models, this functionality is limited, which reduces overclocking to minimal voltage changes.

In MSI versions, engineers have bypassed the limitations: users will now have access to advanced triple voltage control (core, memory, and additional MSVDD line) with a range of ±100 mV, as well as the ability to monitor VRM temperature via built-in sensors.

It is highly likely that this is the return of the legendary Lightning series — it has always been associated with extreme overclocking. The last video card in this series was released back in 2019 in the form of the RTX 2080 Ti Lightning OC. Later, MSI focused on the SUPRIM series, but now the company seems to be preparing a new round of devices for enthusiasts.

It is not yet known when MSI will officially present its new products, but the beta version of Afterburner with support for new features should be released in the coming weeks.
