Apple continues to develop the smart glasses direction, striving to make them a more convenient alternative to the expensive Vision Pro. According to a recent report, the second version of Apple Glasses will have a unique ability to run on two operating systems, depending on which device they are connected to.
According to Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, when connected to a Mac, the glasses will run the full version of visionOS — the same system used in Vision Pro. This will provide access to all mixed reality features. When synced with an iPhone, they will switch to a lightweight mode with a simple interface and lower performance requirements.
The first model, planned for 2026, will not have its own display, which may limit user interest. But the second generation, expected in 2027, will offer a full XR experience and greater autonomy.
Apple is also testing different connection methods — wired and wireless. Although a cable provides minimal latency, the company is leaning towards a wireless option, similar to how AirPods Pro 3 connect to an iPhone via the H2 chip — quickly and without lags.
But if the tests do not meet expectations, the project's release may be delayed. Apple understands that the real revolution will begin when the glasses become a fully autonomous device with a screen, processor, and its own system — a kind of "iPhone on the face."
