Nintendo has confirmed that it will now focus its main efforts on developing for Switch 2. The company plans to strengthen internal resources, including the purchase of new studios.
Unlike previous generations, Nintendo intends to switch to the new platform faster. The DS was once presented as the "third pillar" alongside the GameCube and GBA, and games for the 3DS were released until 2019. Now the company has decided not to delay the transition.
Although the last projects for the original Switch will be released in 2026, including Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and Rhythm Heaven Groove, President Shuntaro Furukawa said in a financial report: "Going forward, we will focus the main direction of development on Switch 2 and expand the business around this platform."
Nintendo is strengthening its production capabilities by building a new "Development Center at the Head Office, Building No. 2" and is considering "purchasing studios as subsidiaries."
Although rumors have already started circulating online about possible deals like "Nintendo buys Sega or Capcom", in reality everything will be more modest. Historically, Nintendo acquires partners with whom it has been cooperating for a long time: Grezzo (The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom), Good Feel (Princess Peach: Showtime!), Tantalus (Skyward Sword HD) and ILCA (Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl). Even long-time allies Intelligent Systems and Hal Laboratory still do not belong to the company.
