Combat Evolved was supposed to be an Apple Macintosh exclusive.
Marcus Lehto, one of the key creators of Halo and co-author of the Master Chief's image, in a new interview with Kent State Magazine, spoke about the earliest days of the legendary series' development and how Microsoft literally snatched the project from Apple's hands.
According to Lehto, Halo: Combat Evolved was originally developed as an exclusive for Apple Macintosh computers and was supposed to be a third-person shooter. In 1999, Steve Jobs himself personally presented the game to the public at the Macworld conference.
We went on stage with Steve Jobs at Macworld and talked about the project there.
However, at that moment, Bungie was experiencing serious financial difficulties. Microsoft took advantage of this, as they were desperately looking for high-profile exclusives to launch their first Xbox console.
And then Microsoft called and said, "Steve Jobs isn't getting this. We're buying you, the whole team is moving to the Northwest [in Redmond], and you're making this game for Xbox."
