The Westeros cinematic universe is preparing for another expansion.
The "Game of Thrones" spin-off with the working title Aegon’s Conquest has received an update from screenwriter Mattson Tomlin. In his X account, he posted a photo of notebooks filled with notes, noting that "it's always nice to fill a notebook to the end". Judging by the signatures, a significant part of the notes is devoted specifically to "Conquest", which indicates an active phase of work on the script. Earlier, in August 2025, Tomlin already said that he had done "a lot" of work on the project.
The project will focus on the early events of Westeros history and tell about the conquest of the continent by Aegon I Targaryen and his sisters-wives Visenya and Rhaenys with the support of three dragons. The action will unfold approximately three centuries before the events of the original "Game of Thrones".
In May 2024, Tomlin said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he is actively consulting with George R. R. Martin. According to him, Aegon’s Conquest feels closer to a historical biography — "like writing about Napoleon or Alexander the Great": the key facts are known, but the context, emotions, and motivation of the characters are unknown and require authorial interpretation.
The release date of the project is still not disclosed. It has also not yet been decided whether Aegon’s Conquest will be a full-length film — similar to Denis Villeneuve’s "Dune", as Warner Bros. planned — or a series for the HBO Max streaming service. Both options are currently being considered.
