The announcement of 1666: Amsterdam at Summer Game Fest was accompanied by an unexpected release of a free prologue on Steam. Patrice Désilets' new project, from the creator of Assassin's Creed, quickly garnered attention, but initial player reviews have been mixed.

The game is set in 17th-century Amsterdam. The project combines stealth, magic elements, and the ability to explore the world through the eyes of a black cat. Despite its unusual concept, the prologue received only 54% positive reviews on Steam. Many users complained about the slow pace, lack of a combat system, and insufficient action.

Journalists from several publications came to the game's defense. In their opinion, some of the criticism stems from players perceiving the prologue as a demo. The authors note that the prologue's purpose is to introduce the audience to the world and story, not to showcase all game mechanics.

Those who tested the project acknowledged technical issues, including performance drops and less-than-expressive dialogues. However, they positively evaluated the atmosphere, the gothic world, the three main characters, and the mechanic of exploring locations as a cat.

According to journalists, many users are too quick to draw conclusions about the project, whereas the prologue was intended only as an introduction to a larger game.
