European Commission Did Not Support the Stop Killing Games Initiative
The EU does not intend to introduce new laws obliging game companies to ensure games continue to function after their official support ends. European officials have shifted responsibility to consumer organizations and representatives of the gaming industry.
The European Commission has officially responded to the Stop Destroying Videogames/Stop Killing Games initiative and decided not to introduce new legislation that would oblige publishers to maintain the functionality of video games after their support ends.
Instead, Brussels intends to organize consultations between consumer organizations and representatives of the gaming industry to discuss more appropriate practices for the “end of life cycle” of games. These meetings may result in voluntary recommendations for publishers and platforms.
The organizers of Stop Killing Games themselves stated that such an outcome was expected. The campaign is now shifting its efforts to the European Parliament, where activists hope to achieve stronger guarantees for players within the framework of the future Digital Fairness Act.
