FNV is loved by many and a sequel is awaited, but this was not always the case. At launch, some things were perceived quite differently, and Obsidian was criticized.

Fallout: New Vegas has gone from “hate to love” over the years. At the time of its release, gamers compared it to Fallout 3 and criticized Obsidian Entertainment's project, but now many love it and urge Bethesda to give the studio the opportunity to make an improved version of FNV or a sequel.

Fallout: New Vegas Game Director Josh Sawyer believes that once such comparisons with the third installment ceased, his project began to be evaluated more fairly:

The reaction of professional reviewers to New Vegas at the time of its release was positive, but quite restrained. People weren't jumping up and shouting, “This is amazing!” Some reviews were quite critical.

He also recalled comments about FNV like “it looks like a mod” and “it's almost no different from Fallout 3.”

However, time passed and the attitude towards Fallout: New Vegas changed – Sawyer believes that players simply forgot their old complaints:

Only over time did it feel like people started to appreciate it. As if they forgot what annoyed them about the reuse of assets and the largely similar [to Fallout 3] gameplay.

Fallout: New Vegas has “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam, a 95% rating after 258+ thousand reviews, and a user score of 8.7 out of 10 on Metacritic.
