Halo creator makes "Marathon competitor" for Roblox - extraction shooter Drifters announced
Bungie co-founder Alexander Seropian believes Roblox is an important part of the future of interactive entertainment.
Alexander Seropian, co-founder of Bungie and one of the creators of the first Halo, along with his studio Look North World, is working on a new extraction shooter, Drifters, for Roblox. The development team includes former employees of Bungie, Epic Games, Electronic Arts, and Disney.
Despite Roblox's reputation as a platform for "simple" games, the developers promise a full-fledged PvPvE action. According to the description, players can expect "a dangerous world full of hostile opponents and even more hostile players". They will have to make forays into lawless zones, extract resources to develop their character, and balance risk and reward.
Alexander Seropian admitted that this step is another creative challenge for him:
"Throughout my career, I have tried to go against trends, always looking for new opportunities to learn and grow as a developer. My journey into Roblox has so far been the most exciting and personally rewarding since the early days of PC game development."
According to the developer, he was strongly attracted by the platform's dynamics and technological growth:
"There's incredible energy around the growth of the audience, tools, and capabilities on this completely new (to me) platform, and I think it represents a very important part of the future of interactive entertainment. We decided to make the game in Roblox to reach a new gaming audience. And we were pleasantly surprised by the quality, depth of the tools, and the energy that helps us create the best games we possibly can."
Along with the announcement, the developers only showed concept art. Visually, it bears little resemblance to the familiar "blocky" Roblox, but in recent years the platform has changed dramatically: Roblox Studio has gained support for physically accurate materials, modern lighting, more complex models, and advanced animations. Thanks to this, projects on the platform are no longer limited to simple blocks – just look at the shooter Frontlines, which was often compared to Call of Duty.
