Former PlayStation head doesn't understand why players are so upset about Sony ditching discs

Shuhei Yoshida himself is a big fan of "digital" because he's too lazy to insert a disc into the console.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida admitted that he was unaware of Sony's plans to completely abandon physical game releases by 2028. However, he himself has almost entirely switched to digital versions and does not consider the absence of discs a serious problem for most players.

In a new interview, Yoshida-san noted that he prefers digital games because he doesn't like storing discs and changing them in the console.

I am a completely digital consumer. I don't want to deal with discs or change them. I want all my games on the dashboard so I can just pick a game and launch it.

At the same time, Yoshida understands why physical editions continue to be in demand. In his opinion, they will persist even after disc production ceases, but he does not see a big problem in their disappearance. The reason is that modern physical versions of games often still require downloading additional content.

Even with games on physical discs, developers constantly update and supplement game data. Therefore, the buyer of a physical version will still have to download new patches, add-ons, or updates. So I don't understand why the absence of a disc is such a big problem.
