The events of the upcoming Resident Evil film by Zak Kreger are directly related to Resident Evil 2.
The Resident Evil franchise is gearing up for another reboot. In 2026, a new adaptation by Zak Kreger, the director of "Barbarian" and "Weapons," will be released. Kreger previously emphasized that he does not intend to literally retell the plot of the games, but will adhere to the canon. He spoke more about this approach in an interview with Fangoria Magazine.
In a conversation with Ryan Scott for /Film, the director confirmed that the film takes place parallel to the events of Resident Evil 2. However, the plot will not intersect with the story of Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield.
"I'm not telling Leon's story. I'm telling my own, which exists in the same world. You can play the second part and not know that the events of my film are happening somewhere nearby, but they are. I follow the rules, but I don't touch the key canonical characters – their story has already been told in the games."
Thus, the upcoming film will not be a direct adaptation, but a standalone spin-off within the extended universe. In terms of format, the film will resemble a story addition that unfolds in parallel with Resident Evil 2.
Kreger also previously noted that his project is closer in atmosphere to Resident Evil 4.
