Lionsgate has launched production on a film about the youth of the cult action hero.
Lionsgate has officially announced the start of filming on a prequel to the "Rambo" franchise titled "John Rambo." Filming has already begun in Thailand — in Bangkok and several regions that will "portray" Vietnam in the film. The project's first poster has also been released.
The lead role in the film will be played by Noah Centineo. The movie will tell the story of young John Rambo during his service in Vietnam, long before the events of "First Blood" (1982), which was based on the novel by David Morrell.
The project is being directed by Jalmari Helander, known for the film "Sisu." The screenplay was written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. The cast also includes Yao Yannian, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Taime Thapthimthong. Sylvester Stallone, who embodied Rambo in the original films, is not involved in the project, although the producers do not rule out a possible cameo from him in the future.
"John Rambo" will become the franchise's first film since "Rambo: Last Blood" (2019). The exact premiere date has not yet been announced, but the release is expected no earlier than 2027.
