GameStop mocked the 30-day offline limit on PS5 and urged to buy discs instead of digital games
GameStop marketers decided to take advantage of the "DRM on PS5" situation.
Recently, PlayStation 5 players noticed a line indicating the "license expiration date." Some began to fear that if they failed the online verification after 30 days, they would be blocked from launching games purchased in the PS Store.
GameStop stores reacted to this. Marketers decided to play on Sony's slogan "Play Has No Limits" and promote their sale of physical game copies:
Games truly have no limits at GameStop. We believe games should work for players, not against them. If you "own a game," you should be able to play it anytime, anywhere — online or offline. And we're here to help you with that. Start building a real collection that you can play, share, and trade: get 10% off when you buy 2–3 pre-owned [physical copies] games, 20% off for 4–5, and 30% off for 6 or more for a limited time. Only at GameStop.
However, some members of the gaming community, like Bgmegamanzero1, noted that GameStop did not mention one technical nuance:
Do people even realize that discs go through the same verification [as digital versions] that they are crying about now?
Another participant in the discussion, LunarEque, stated that "most disc versions DO NOT require such verification."
Bgmegamanzero1 continued to defend his position and added:
The disc is a license. Most discs contain very little data. It's essentially a license key, and you download the full game. Why do you think most discs have so little material, and to launch the game [you insert the disc into the console]? The disc is a verification for the game installed on your hard drive.
