Bungie in Serious Trouble: Sony Writes Off Hundreds of Millions of Dollars Due to Studio's Failures
Sony's financial reports confirm: the $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie is not living up to expectations. According to fresh data for the 2025 fiscal year (ended March 31, 2026), the Japanese giant was forced to conduct a large-scale write-off of the studio's assets.
In the fourth quarter, Sony recorded an impairment loss on Bungie's assets amounting to 88.6 billion yen ($565 million). Including the second quarter, when $204 million was written off, the total impairment losses on Bungie's assets for the year amounted to 120.1 billion yen (approximately $765 million).
Analyst Daniel Ahmad attributes this to the decline in Destiny 2's performance and the weak launch of the new Marathon franchise.
Such large-scale asset write-offs mean that Sony has officially acknowledged that Bungie's real market value is now much lower than it was at the time of its acquisition in 2022.
Despite an overall 12% increase in Sony's gaming division's operating profit, Bungie became the "anchor" that dragged financial performance down. Without these write-offs, the gaming segment's profit could have been record-breaking.
The situation around Marathon looks alarming. If the project was previously considered the studio's main hope for the future, the current financial holes hint at serious problems with audience retention or monetization.
It should be recalled that Sony acquired Bungie partly for their expertise in creating live-service games, but it seems that this experience is currently costing the corporation too much.
