"Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" Becomes Second Highest-Grossing Video Game Adaptation in History
Nintendo solidified its leadership among the most successful video game adaptations.
The animated film "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" from Nintendo and Illumination has become the second highest-grossing video game adaptation in history. According to fresh data from Box Office Mojo, the film grossed $967.6 million worldwide, surpassing "Minecraft: The Movie," which ended its run with $960 million.
Now, the top two spots in the ranking are occupied by Nintendo and Universal projects. The leader remains "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" from 2023 with $1.36 billion, and the sequel will no longer be able to catch up to the original. The gap is almost $400 million, and the main theatrical release has come to an end – on May 19, "Galactic Cinema" was released digitally.
Nintendo does not plan to stop there. Next year, the company will release an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, and a Donkey Kong film, a third "Mario" installment, and other projects are already in development. According to rumors, the company's plans are set for the next ten years.
