Sony to Deprive PlayStation Users of Access to 551 Purchased Movies - Including "Terminator 2," "Rambo," and More
The corporation once again reminded that a digital purchase does not guarantee permanent access to content.
Sony has warned PlayStation owners about the removal of 551 movies and TV shows previously purchased through the PlayStation Store. Users have already started receiving notifications stating that from September 1, they "will no longer be able to access previously purchased StudioCanal content, and the movies themselves will be removed from their video library." The company cites the expiration of licensing agreements as the reason.
The list of films to which users will lose access includes "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Total Recall," "Rambo: First Blood," "Cliffhanger," "From Dusk Till Dawn," and many others. The full list can be found on the official PlayStation website.
Kotaku has already contacted Sony to find out if customers can expect a refund for the deleted movies or at least some compensation, but there has been no response yet.
The current precedent once again shows why gamers are increasingly supporting the Stop Killing Games movement. By clicking the "Buy" button in any digital store, the consumer is legally only renting content for an indefinite period, which can end at any moment at the discretion of third parties. This is why the decision to include an activation code instead of a full game disc in the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI causes so much controversy.
