Some players have long wanted a Steam version of Genshin Impact and Fortnite.

Recently, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney introduced a new concept called Team Open. He believes that Unreal Engine developers could compete with Roblox creators by combining social systems and economies of different games.

During a conversation with PC Gamer, Sweeney noted that while Valve is doing well, the company is missing many opportunities because Steam does not reach a large audience of players:

They're doing really well on PC, but what percentage of the PC audience are they reaching? They're not reaching the Fortnite audience — they don't have Fortnite, they don't have Riot Games' titles, and Genshin Impact, and many of the industry's most popular games are not on Steam.

Sweeney then returned to the topic of commissions and criticized Valve's policy. He cited Microsoft, Google, and Epic Games as examples, which charge low commissions and have improved conditions for all developers:

They [Valve] are missing a lot of opportunities that I think they could have if they took a more forward-looking and open stance, as Epic and Microsoft have. The Microsoft Store has a 12% commission — that's very favorable. Google is also now offering developers better terms and is preparing some interesting innovations for the future.

Tim Sweeney believes that there is now an opportunity to implement his Team Open concept, and there would be a place for Valve, which could explore the mobile market and gain access to a new audience:

Steam is a very successful business — many players love it — but imagine if it were available on all platforms? What if it were on iPhone and Android? What if there were even more games there?

The head of Epic Games also noted that "from time to time" the company presented the Open Team concept, and "recently, against the backdrop of all the difficulties in the industry, interest [in the concept] has unexpectedly been higher than ever before." However, Sweeney did not specify who exactly showed interest.
