Insufficient AI use became one of the main reasons for Destiny 2's decline, says Epic Games head
Tim Sweeney found another reason to show everyone how much he loves AI.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney commented on the reasons for Destiny 2's decline, suggesting that one of the key problems was the insufficient use of generative artificial intelligence by Bungie and Sony.
The comment was prompted by a Forbes publication, which, citing an anonymous source, claimed that Destiny 2 was only sporadically profitable for most of its existence. According to the insider, the main reason was the colossal costs of constantly creating new content necessary to retain the audience. Moreover, when the project did become profitable, the funds received were allegedly often spent by management on numerous experimental projects and expensive initiatives, including the construction of a new headquarters covering approximately 19 thousand square meters.
Against this backdrop, Tim Sweeney ironically commented on the situation, hinting that modern technologies could solve one of the main development problems. According to him, if there were a technology capable of significantly simplifying content creation, games like Destiny could continue to develop successfully. By this, he clearly meant generative artificial intelligence.
However, the reasons for Destiny 2's current state are not limited to economic factors alone. Journalists and players also point to unpopular changes in game systems, a weak conclusion to storylines, prolonged periods without new content, and the reallocation of Bungie's resources to develop the new shooter Marathon.
It is worth noting that Tim Sweeney has long advocated for the active implementation of AI in the gaming industry. In his opinion, generative technologies will become an integral part of almost all future development processes. Earlier, he also criticized Valve's policy requiring disclosure of AI use in games, stating that such measures only complicate developers' path to commercial success.
