The sequel to "Five Nights at Freddy's" debuted worse than the original, but analysts see no problem with this.
"Five Nights at Freddy's 2" debuted in US cinemas with $56.6 million, setting a record among premieres in the first weekend after Thanksgiving and becoming one of the most successful December releases in the horror genre.
Nevertheless, the film failed to repeat the success of the original, which earned $80 million at the start, despite the fact that the first part was released simultaneously in cinemas and on streaming. Analysts note that the comparison is incorrect: in 2023, the launch was influenced by the surprise effect and hype around the first film adaptation of the game. In addition, for a weekend immediately after the holiday period, the second part's figures are considered more than decent.
Despite the devastating reviews from critics — 13% on Rotten Tomatoes versus 33% for the original — viewers received the film noticeably warmer. The audience rating reached 88% based on more than a thousand reviews, which is even higher than the first part, which scored 86%.
With a budget of $35 million, the sequel appears to be paying off. Rumor has it that Universal and Blumhouse have already launched the third part into development. However, whether the franchise can repeat the success of the original, which grossed over $300 million worldwide, remains to be seen.
