Eclipse Glow Games shared their approach to difficulty and failure.
Eclipse Glow Games studio has presented the philosophy of difficulty for its upcoming action game Tides of Annihilation. According to producer Koon Foo, the team aims to make boss battles grandiose and cinematic, but without excessive punishment for mistakes.
«We are carefully monitoring how retries feel. Our task is to minimize unnecessary repetitions while maintaining a sense of continuity in the story and the fight.»
According to the producer, each battle was created taking into account its role in the story: some bosses advance the story, others test skills or serve as an emotional pause. Some battles will feature checkpoints or short pauses allowing the player to recover. Moreover, players will be rewarded even for defeats to help in the next attempt. Details of this system have not yet been disclosed.
The events of Tides of Annihilation unfold in a reimagined London that has survived an invasion from another world. The main character, Gwendoline, is the only survivor of the siege, possessing the ability to summon spectral knights of the Round Table. She faces a struggle to save her sister, search for the Holy Grail, and confront the demigods of Avalon, who threaten to destroy the boundaries between worlds.
The developers promise dynamic battles, a branched skill tree, diverse opponents, and more than 30 boss fights. A complete playthrough, according to the studio, will take over 30 hours. The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but the exact release date has not yet been announced.
