Fallout creator criticized streamers - "games are made for them"

Fallout creator Tim Cain criticized the modern gaming industry and the influence of streamers.

According to him, today the success of a game depends not only on its gameplay, but also on how it looks in short videos by influencers. The developer stated that studios are increasingly creating games with an eye on content for streams, rather than for players.

He calls "viral potential" the key factor — the game's ability to generate spectacular short moments for videos. According to him, developers are increasingly thinking:

  • "How will this moment look live?"
  • "Will it go viral on social media?"

Tim Cain noted:

We often asked ourselves: how will this event in the game look when someone plays it live or streams it? We wanted the video to look really great.

He also stated that the way games are perceived has changed. Previously, opinions were formed by journalists, now — by influencers.

According to him, players are increasingly perceiving not a review, but a streamer's opinion as a ready-made instruction on what to think about the game.

Cain believes that this leads to the radicalization of opinions: people form attitudes towards games they haven't even played, based solely on the emotions of their favorite bloggers.
