Many players now know Stardew Valley, which spawned many other "cozy" life and farm simulation games. However, Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone's hit might never have been released, as the game's development process was very poorly organized.
In July, PC Gamer republished an interview ConcernedApe gave in 2016. At that time, the solo developer spoke about how Stardew Valley could have been canceled. The computer he was working on broke down, and he hadn't made any backups. Barone had already decided then that it was all over, but in the end, he was still able to recover his project from an old hard drive and assembled a new PC:
Looking back, it seems crazy that it all worked out. All the development was very sloppy. It was the most "indie development" you could imagine: no professional approach, everything learned on the fly, and the code was as homemade as it gets. I'm even a little embarrassed that other people might look at my code!
Currently, Eric Barone is not only supporting Stardew Valley but also developing a new ambitious project, Haunted Chocolatier. Work is progressing, but he is not yet ready to announce a release date.
