Legislators have come up with another way to replenish the treasury.
Recently, a legislative initiative from Mexico has attracted the attention of the gaming community. In essence, violent video games are intended to be equated to a pack of cigarettes.
According to the document presented to the Chamber of Deputies, it is proposed to introduce a special tax of 8% on digital services related to violent video games.
It was also proposed to increase taxes on online gambling (gambling) and soft drinks, including products containing non-caloric sweeteners.
The "General Criteria for Economic Policy" states that "Recent studies have revealed a link between playing violent video games and higher levels of aggression among adolescents, as well as negative social and psychological consequences, such as isolation and anxiety."
The administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum claims that "the consumption of products from these industries entails high social and economic costs: from obesity and diabetes associated with the consumption of sugary drinks, to isolation and anxiety associated with intensive video game play, as well as financial losses for families as a result of the growing popularity of digital gambling."
It is assumed that the introduction of this tax will lead to an increase in the cost of video games for players from Mexico.
