The long-awaited return of the "Tron" franchise has turned into a major financial loss for Disney.
The film "Tron: Ares" has become one of Disney's biggest commercial failures in recent years. According to Deadline, the total cost of the project — including production, marketing, and additional filming — reached approximately $347.5 million.
The projected total revenue, taking into account theatrical revenue, digital sales, television rights, and other sources of income, is estimated at $214.8 million. This means a net loss for the studio of about $132.7 million.
Initially, the film's budget was estimated at $170–180 million, but eventually grew to $220 million. Significant additional costs were incurred for the promotional campaign, including the premiere with Nine Inch Nails and a large-scale laser show in Hollywood.
As of publication, "Tron: Ares" has grossed $103 million worldwide, with the film losing 67% of its box office in its second weekend, and the audience continues to shrink. Even in an optimistic scenario — about $160 million in worldwide box office — the project will not be able to pay off and will remain in the red.
The premiere of "Tron: Ares" took place on October 10, 2025. The film became the third part of the cult science fiction series that began in 1982. Even before the release of the film, aggregators noted it as one of the most anticipated releases of the fall, but the result was contradictory: 53% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with 86% positive reviews from viewers could not ensure mass success in прокате.
