Josh Boone admitted that he was extremely dissatisfied with the process of creating the film and its result.
Director and screenwriter of \"The New Mutants\" Josh Boone, five years after the release, said that working on the film was \"traumatic\" and \"unsatisfactory\" for him. In an interview with The Direct, he recalled how the project faced a series of problems, from the sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the distribution.
\"It was very difficult. The studio was sold right during filming, and when it was time to release, the pandemic began. I love the actors, but the whole process turned out to be extremely exhausting. We worked on this film for years, and in the end everything turned out so unsatisfactory.\"
\"The New Mutants\" was originally conceived as a horror film in the \"X-Men\" universe and was supposed to be a fresh look at the topic of mutants. However, after the change of ownership, the project lost its direction. The director admits that he was allowed to implement only part of what was conceived.
\"We did, maybe, half of what we wanted. Then the edits, delays began, and in the end everything turned into a compromise.\"
The film was released in August 2020 and became the last Fox project on \"X-Men\" before the rights to the franchise passed to Disney. With a budget of about $80 million, the film grossed less than $50 million and received only 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming one of the lowest-rated comic book films of the decade.
